Five-Alarm Fire Bell

Robert J. Shiller, Yale professor of economics and finance, writes that a lack of government action to reduce unemployment could result in "social discord for years to come."

In The New York Times Economic View column, "The Fire Bell of Unemployment," Professor Shiller describes the "most important reasons" for the lack of government action to reduce unemployment in the United States. Professor Shiller writes that the reasons for inaction are intellectually based and not purely political.

Professor Shiller's fire bell analogy is a version of Thomas Jefferson's "fire bell in the night"; a reference to Jefferson's concern about "angry passions" between the North and South in the United States.of the 1820s.
