Leo Gerard: Republicans are 'the party of Henry Potter'

Many of you are familiar with Frank Capra's Christmas classic, "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946) in which the themes of community and greed are explored. Today, we have Leo Gerard writing profoundly about the subjects of community and greed.

In the AlterNet article, "How the GOP Tries to Transform America into a Selfish, Souless Place," Leo Gerard describes how the contemporary Republican Party is very much like "Henry Potter"; the greedy, selfish banker -- superbly played by Lionel Barrymore in "It's a Wonderful Life" -- who disparaged the people of "Bedford Falls" for working together to improve their lives.

Mr. Gerard currently serves as international president of the United Steelworkers  union, and he is a member of the AFL-CIO Executive Committee and chairs the labor federation’s Public Policy Committee.

P.S. Lionel Barrymore's performance as "Henry F. Potter" in "It's a Wonderful Life" was Oscar-worthy; perhaps the Academy should posthumously award him an Oscar.
