Quotation for Today: The Impoverished Elderly

"Please, please keep me in mind. I can start any time you like."
Kate Hamon

In a desperate plea for a job, Kate Hamon spoke the above quoted words over the telephone to a Kmart manager.  Ms. Hamon, a 78-year old retiree, lives in the Gold Rush region of California, and she is one of many retirees who now find themselves striving to survive in this Little Depression that has impoverished so many Americans.

In September 2011, the California Assembly passed a new law establishing the Elder Economic Security Standard Index. State agencies will use this new index and not the federal poverty level to measure senior poverty.
